Medicine is not just a profession; it’s a calling that demands exceptional skill and an unwavering sense of responsibility. We’ve dedicated our lives to this noble pursuit, driven by a shared commitment to heal, serve, and advocate for our patients. This commitment, the essence of our work, fuels our passion and drives my vision for the California Medical Association (CMA).

After graduating from The Chicago Medical School, I embarked on a journey to San Francisco for residency and then to UC Davis for a fellowship in Cardiology. My desire to make a meaningful impact drew me to California's Central Valley, where I chose to practice and focus on serving underserved communities. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of treating patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnicities, often communicating with them in Spanish to ensure they felt understood and cared for. My free monthly clinics have provided essential care to those who need it most, and this work has been profoundly fulfilling for many years. Later, We continued to serve our community, and our clinic was one of the first in the county to administer COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic.

My calling expanded 22 years ago when the California Chapter of the American College of Cardiology invited me to run for our regional council. This opportunity ignited my passion for organized medicine. Since then, I’ve attended nearly every national and state legislative day, advocating tirelessly for our profession and patients. I’ve come to deeply appreciate the importance of building relationships with legislators and educating them on the issues that matter most to us. Your involvement in these efforts is crucial, and I urge you to join me in this vital work.

Fifteen years ago, my advocacy took on a new dimension when I became deeply involved in efforts to protect our young athletes by donating AEDs to area high schools. This work was recognized when I received the first Young Physician Award from the San Joaquin Medical Society. This honor, a testament to the impact of our collective efforts, propelled me into further leadership roles, including serving as president of our society. These recognitions and roles, which I see as a reflection of our shared commitment and dedication, have reassured me of our capabilities and the potential for further positive change.

Leadership in medicine is a calling in itself. It requires us to envision and shape the future of our profession through active involvement in organizations like the CMA and AMA. Currently, I have the privilege of serving as your trustee for the CMA and as a delegate to the AMA. I’m also in my sixth term as a CALPAC member, where I’ve served on the executive committee.

My experience spans the full spectrum of medical practice. During my fellowship, I worked in Kaiser and VA hospitals, participated in group practice, and now run a solo practice. My involvement with the American College of Cardiology includes serving as president of the state chapter and on the national Board of Governors. My contributions include leading efforts to reduce prior authorization burdens and fostering international collaboration. I served as the committee chair in developing a toolkit to help reduce the burden of prior authorization. I also chaired a committee to help strengthen international collaboration.

I stand before you as a candidate and a leader committed to building consensus, fostering collaboration, and advancing our shared goals. For the past 24 years, I’ve been closely involved in training the next generation of physicians—medical students and fellows—and I will continue to champion a holistic approach to ensuring that all modes of practice remain viable. We are interconnected; the success of one is the success of all.

We must confront physician burnout together, and I am committed to working with you to find sustainable solutions. Our profession’s integrity should be our primal goal, and we must remain vigilant against any attempts to undermine our training or compromise patient safety. Supporting our young physicians as they navigate their careers is essential. I bring the experience necessary to guide them. I’ve given talks to the UC Davis and Stanford fellows, sharing insights on successfully navigating medical practice.

As your candidate for CMA President-Elect, I am dedicated to bringing my extensive experience to the CMA’s executive committee. Together, we can strengthen our organization, ensuring that physicians receive the respect we deserve while standing firm against external threats. Our unity is our strength, and I am here to serve.

Update:

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that since writing this story, my beloved mother has passed away after months of battling in the hospital, ultimately succumbing to sepsis. From the moment I was born, she has been my advisor, my friend, and the most selfless mother. Her unwavering love and guidance shaped who I am today, and I will miss her more than words can express.

“I am a miracle child; I was born in Haifa, Israel. My father was told that either my mother or I will not make it out of the emergent C-Section since my Mother had a complicated pregnancy. We both made it and we are still alive. Later, when I heard this story I knew that I wanted to be a humanitarian physician and give back to making and also to the field of medicine.

How did I get involved with organized medicine?

It dates back to the time when I received a call 20 years ago to run for California Cardiology as a councilor for my region. I learned quickly that to have a voice, you have to be on table negotiation or otherwise you will be part of the menu.

I gained much experience over many years especially with advocacy and have made strong relationships with state and national legislatures. I got involved with our local medical society and then CMA and AMA after I was given the first-ever San Joaquin Medical Society’s Young physician award for my humanitarian efforts in donating AEDs to local high schools.

Why am I running for CMA’s president-elect position?

I am running for President-Elect of the California Medical Association because I believe that physicians need a strong advocate who understands the challenges we face both in practice and in our healthcare system. Throughout my career, I have witnessed the evolving landscape of medicine, from patient care to regulatory issues, and I am passionate about ensuring that our voices are heard.

My goal is to drive initiatives that prioritize patient safety, improve access to care, and address the ongoing mental and physical well-being of healthcare providers. By fostering collaboration, advocating for fair policies, and promoting advancements in medical education, I am committed to empowering our medical community to meet the demands of modern healthcare while protecting the integrity of our profession.

This position is an opportunity to leverage my experience to help lead us forward, ensuring that California physicians continue to have a strong voice in shaping the future of healthcare."

A Lifesaving Mission for Student Athletes

Dr. Manshadi’s 15-Year Advocacy for Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention and Expanding AED Access Across California and Beyond.

"I was honored to receive the inaugural Young Physician Award from the San Joaquin Medical Society for my long-standing advocacy in raising public awareness about sudden cardiac death (SCD) in athletes and donating automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to high schools. Over the past 15 years, I've been deeply committed to this cause, and I am thrilled to see progress with the recent passage of a California bill ensuring greater AED access. Additionally, there are now two federal bills in progress that aim to provide grants for high schools to obtain AEDs. Even today, I continue to receive requests from schools seeking donations, and I’ve used proceeds from my book to help fund the purchase of AEDs."

From Medicine to Mentorship

How Dr. Manshadi Transformed Local Soccer Programs and Inspired Future Athletes

Beyond healthcare, Dr. Manshadi has been an active contributor to his community, dedicating his time to coaching competitive soccer with the Stockton Storm and the varsity soccer team at St. Mary's High School. He led the Stockton Storm club team to a State Cup victory and revitalized the St. Mary's High School soccer program, guiding them to back-to-back league championships with an undefeated record. Remarkably, he took over a team that had not had a winning season in 20 years, and within just two years, he helped them achieve consecutive league titles. This year, Coach Manshadi has retired from coaching to focus more on his medical practice and leadership roles in healthcare.
